What is SpotGuesser?
A daily trivia game answered on a map. Every answer is a real place: I drop a pin on the globe where I think it is, and the closer my pin, the more points I score.
Which topics are there?
Football, Formula 1 and Landmarks. Each has its own 5 questions every day, the same for everyone, and every topic is free.
When do new matches come out?
At midnight where I am. My day runs from my own midnight to the next, wherever I play, and the clock in the menu counts down to it.
Can I finish a match after midnight?
Yes: a match I started before midnight stays open for me the next day. It only counts for my streak, XP and leagues if I finish it on its own day, though.
I missed a day. Can I still play it?
Past matches are closed, but every one is in Past games: tap a day to see its answers and the stories behind them.
Past gamesWhat is the Playground?
Quizzes to play any time, as often as I like, grouped by subject: capitals, great cities, rivers and mountains, stadiums and finals, circuits, landmarks, beaches, airports, national parks, ancient cities and battlefields. Each quiz has two modes. Quick 10 is ten of its places drawn at random, for a score out of 1,000. Endless goes through every place, then shuffles and goes again, for as long as I like: good guesses in a row multiply the points, a miss starts the run over, and my best is the longest run I string together. Nothing in the Playground counts for my streak, XP or leagues, and my best scores stay in this browser.
The PlaygroundDo I need an account for the Playground?
A few quizzes are open to everyone, signed in or not: one for each daily topic, and Capitals of Europe. The rest open with a free account, regular or otherwise. A locked quiz still shows its page; the way in is on it.
Can I move my pin before I lock it in?
Yes. Tap somewhere else, or drag the pin. Nothing counts until I press Lock it in, and after that my guess is final.
Can I play with a keyboard?
Yes. Tab to the globe, turn it with the arrow keys, zoom with plus and minus, and press Enter to drop my pin in the middle.
Scoring and streaks
How is a guess scored?
Each question is worth up to 100 points, so a perfect match is 500. The distance is a straight line over the earth's surface: 100 miles off still keeps 95 points, 1,000 miles keeps 50, and the other side of the world scores 0.
The full scoring tableWhat do the colors mean?
Great is 90 to 100 points, Close 50 to 89, Far 1 to 49, and an Extreme miss 0. My shared squares use the same colors.
How does my streak work?
One streak covers every topic: a day counts once I finish any of its matches on its own day. Miss a day and it starts again; Past games never change it.
Can I play the same match twice?
No. My first guess on each question is final. Signed in, that holds on every device: the first match I finish is the one that counts. It keeps every score fair.
How do I share my score?
After a match, Share sends my score and five colored squares, and no answers. Anyone with the link can play the same match and try to beat it, with no account needed.
Accounts
Do I need an account to play?
No. Every match is free to play without one; my scores stay in this browser.
What does a free account add?
XP and levels, achievements, my matches on every device, leagues with friends and a place on the weekly leaderboard. Signing up takes an email address.
Sign up or log inI played before I signed up. Are those matches lost?
No. When I sign up or log in on the same device, the matches I played there move to my account.
What does SpotGuesser keep about me?
My email address, my username, my country (which I can hide) and my scores. No advertising, no marketing emails, and nothing sold.
The privacy noticeCan other people see my profile?
Only my public page: my username, avatar, country, level and when I joined. Never my scores, my email, my leagues or my answers. Anyone with its link can open it, search engines don't list it, and Settings makes it private. Members of my leagues see my scores in those leagues.
Can I change my username?
Yes, in Settings: 3 to 20 letters, numbers and hyphens, once a day. A free account can change it 5 times in all.
How do I delete my account?
In Settings, at the bottom: Delete my account. My profile, XP and achievements go at once and can't come back; the scores I played stay as anonymous numbers.
Leagues
What is a league?
The people I play with every day: friends, family or the office. Our daily scores line up on their own, and every week, Monday to Sunday, has a winner.
My leaguesHow do I invite people?
From the league's Members page. I add their email addresses and SpotGuesser sends each one an invitation, good for 7 days. Or I share the league's link, which works for 7 days; I can make a new one at any time.
How big can a league be?
A league holds up to 8 players, and I can be in 2 leagues in all, mine and friends' together.
Which topics does a league compare?
The ones its owner picks in the league's Settings. A change counts from the next day.
Can the other members see my email address?
No. Members see usernames only. The owner sees the addresses they invited, and each one is deleted when the invitation is used, turned down or runs out.
Can I see where the others dropped their pins?
Yes, on the league's Today tab, once I've finished that topic myself today, so nothing gets given away.
How do I leave a league?
On its Members page: Leave the league. My scores stay mine, and I can come back later with a new invite link.
Leaderboard
How does the leaderboard work?
It shows the week's best daily scores from everyone signed in, with a new board every Monday. It opens once at least one person a day plays, on average over a week.
The leaderboardCan I keep my name off it?
Yes. In Settings, switch Leaderboard off, and my username won't show even if I make the top ten.
Guest hosts
What is a guest host?
Some days, someone who really knows the topic writes the five questions: a creator, a podcaster, a groundhopper. The rules and the scoring stay the same; the places are theirs.
Guest hostsEmails and privacy
What emails will I get?
The ones my account needs: confirming my address, one welcome, a new password, a change of email. Then a nudge, now and then, when my league has played and I haven't for a couple of days and the weekly league recap, each of which I can switch off. Tips and news only if I switch them on. Never more than two alerts or reminders a week.
How do I stop an email?
Every optional email ends with a link to stop that kind, and one to stop them all, with no log-in needed. Or switch each kind on or off in Settings, under Emails.
Email settingsSomeone invited me to a league by email. How do I stop that?
Every invitation email ends with "Don't email me league invitations again". One click stops them for that address, with no account needed.
What cookies does SpotGuesser use?
A player ID, so my matches stay mine, and my time zone, so my day starts at my midnight. Google Analytics only if I switch it on; Cookie settings, at the bottom of the menu, changes that at any time.
