The 2026 Ballon d'Or will be presented at the London Palladium on Monday 26 October, from 8pm UK time. The votes are already in. One journalist from each of the top 100 countries in FIFA's ranking picked ten names from a shortlist of 30, judging the season from 3 August 2025 to the World Cup final on 19 July 2026, and voting closed on 28 September.

The bookmakers see a two-man race. On 29 September they made Harry Kane the favourite, with Lamine Yamal second; within a week they had swapped them round. No reason has been given, and the ballots are secret. The award's history, and why it has come to London, is in our map of 70 years of winners. This is the map of the two seasons the voters were judging.

Kane: Munich, Berlin and 73 goals

Kane was born at Whipps Cross Hospital in east London in July 1993 and grew up in Chingford, in a house backing onto a park. His first football was for Ridgeway Rovers at the Peter May Sports Centre in Walthamstow, where a statue of him has stood since November 2024. "The Peter May Centre was where I played my first football," he said at the unveiling.

His 2025-26 season in numbers: 73 goals in 65 games for Bayern Munich and England, according to Bundesliga.com, the best total this century after Lionel Messi's 82 in 2011-12. For Bayern he scored 61 in 51, including 36 in the Bundesliga, which won him a second European Golden Shoe. He became the first player to finish top scorer in each of his first three Bundesliga seasons.

Bayern won the league on 19 April with a 4-2 win over Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena, Kane among the scorers, and finished the season with a record 122 league goals. On 23 May they met Stuttgart again in the cup final at Berlin's Olympiastadion, and Kane scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win. With the Supercup in August, that made three trophies. The one that got away was the Champions League: Paris Saint-Germain knocked Bayern out in the semi-finals, 6-5 on aggregate, despite Kane's equaliser in the 94th minute of the second leg in Munich.

"It was, by far, the best season of my life," Kane told Marca in September. "But the Ballon d'Or is not in my hands."

Kane's summer: from Arlington to Atlanta

At the World Cup, England's captain scored six goals in seven games: two against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, one against Panama in New Jersey, two against DR Congo in Atlanta in the round of 32, and a penalty against Mexico at the Azteca in the last 16.

England's run ended in Atlanta. On 15 July they led Argentina in the semi-final until the 85th minute, then conceded twice and lost 2-1. "Once we went 1-0 up we seemed to just try and hold on, which at this level is just not enough, so I'm gutted," Kane said. Three days later, with Kane on the bench, England beat France 6-4 in Miami Gardens to finish third, their best World Cup since 1966. His coach, Thomas Tuchel, has made the case for him: "It's just the full package."

Yamal: Rocafonda, La Masia and a title missed

Yamal was born on 13 July 2007 in Esplugues de Llobregat, just outside Barcelona, and grew up in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood of Mataró about 20 miles up the coast. When he scores, he makes a "304" with his fingers: the end of Rocafonda's postcode, 08304. He joined Barcelona's academy at seven, and trained at La Masia, which since 2011 has been part of the club's training complex in Sant Joan Despí.

His season with Barcelona brought 24 goals in 45 games, more than any team-mate, and he was named La Liga's player of the season. In January he started the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah, where Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-2. He finished second in last year's Ballon d'Or, behind Ousmane Dembélé.

Then came the injury. On 22 April he tore a hamstring while scoring a penalty against Celta Vigo, and missed the rest of the club season. That included the night Barcelona won the league: a 2-0 win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou on 10 May, the subject of our map of the Clásico's grounds. Barcelona's Champions League had already ended, with a quarter-final defeat by Atlético Madrid.

Yamal's summer: a world champion at 19

He was back for the World Cup and played in all eight of Spain's games. His only goal came against Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, but FIFA named him player of the match against Austria and against Belgium, both at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. He turned 19 on the day before the semi-final, and on 19 July he played the whole of the final at MetLife Stadium, where Ferran Torres scored the only goal in extra time against Argentina. Spain's route is in our map of their World Cup.

The individual awards went elsewhere: Rodri won the Golden Ball and Yamal's Barcelona team-mate Pau Cubarsí the best young player award. Yamal has said he will not lobby for the Ballon d'Or. "I am not going to beg for anything," he told reporters in September. His club coach, Hansi Flick, is in no doubt either: "He deserves to win the Ballon d'Or."

What the voters weigh

The jury is asked to judge individual performances first, then team performances and titles, then class and fair play. Kane has the goals and three trophies with Bayern. Yamal has three trophies too, the Super Cup, the league and the World Cup, but missed the last month of his club season.

Either way, it would be a first of sorts. No Englishman has won since Michael Owen in 2001, and Kane's best finish so far is tenth, in 2018. Yamal, at 19, would be younger than any winner before him; Ronaldo, at 21 in 1997, holds that record now. "I just have to win, win, win," Yamal told The Guardian last month, "and there will be a time when there's no debate."
